Market place

In this picture we are standing in front of the Ratshof and looking to the Roter Turm (Red Tower). It is the biggest free-standing bell tower in Germany with the biggest chimes of the world.

On the left background you can see the big market church, which has 4 instead of 2 towers. This is because in former times there were 2 churches, but one was destroyed. Martin Luther was preaching in the church 1545/1546 and the organ was inaugurated in presence of Johann-Sebastian Bach in 1716.

Those 5 towers are the town's landmark. They have inspired many artists like Caspar David Friedrich ("Die Schwestern auf dem Söller").
